Best Use Cases for Lightning Experience
[Could / Short / Salesforce.com]
The Salesforce Lightning Experience was released with Winter '16, providing a responsive user interface (adapts based on device used), sales board for quickly managing opportunities, new report and dashboard visualization, real-time duplicate alerts, address auto-completion, and tons more.

Users can toggle between the Lightning Experience and Salesforce Classic via a menu on the top right of the screen.

Administrators can change settings through the streamlined setup menu in the Lightning Experience.

Salesforce Classic refers to the traditional (not Lightning Experience) full desktop browser user interface.

For a user to access the Lightning Experience, the following must occur:

1. The Lightning Experience needs to be enabled (org-wide settings).
2. The user must be assigned the "Lightning Experience User" permission (via profile or permission set).

Classic can be disabled using the permission "Hide Option to Switch to Salesforce Classic".

Several user interface settings can be enabled to make administration faster and more intuitive. Most of these features will automatically be enabled in new orgs.

Two pages that can be helpful for administrators:
1. System Overview (Setup --> System Overview) - provides an overview against system limits (# of objects, licenses, etc.).
2. Force.com Home Page (setup --> Force.com Home) - provides a list of recently viewed setup components and links to commonly accessed functions.

Concepts referenced here (fields, validation rules, objects, etc.) will be reviewed in greater detail in each respective section in this guide.

    Hi John,

I have a question about the difference between Quick Actions and Buttons. In SF Classic, I can see a new button is displayed above the fields in a record, while a Quick Action appears in the “Show Feed” dropdown above the record. However, in Lightning, it seems like both Quick Actions and Buttons appear in the top right hand corner in the same spot. What is the difference between Quick Actions and Buttons in Lightning, then?

Additionally, I can see in SF Classic there is a standard button on the page layout labeled “Check Integration Status”, but I can’t see this button on the record itself in Classic, but I can see the button on the record in Lightning. Is there a reason certain standard buttons are hidden in Classic? Thank you!

    • JohnCoppedge December 21, 2017 at 9:30 pm #

What object do you see the integration button on?

Actions are in lightning and mobile, while buttons are in classic and lightning. This is a really good question and something I’ll expand on as I’m working on the curriculum.

    John,
Lightning Migration Experience Series shows only 1 video which is 2 and a half min. While you have mentioned ‘series of videos’ duration 8 min.

    Hi John,

I’m using study guide from SF for 201 certification and I noticed that some material on this website is not mentioned in the study guide (like this section, for example) and some of the material that is mentioned on the study guide I cant find on this website (for example, Marketing and Support applications).
Does this website aligned with the study guide in any way, or this is kind of fundamentals that admins must know. How did you structured materials here?

    • JohnCoppedge October 2, 2017 at 1:15 pm #

User interface would be part of standard and custom objects – I will have a complete mapping of materials to study guide with the new launch (this page can be seen on the beta site from the certification page). Marketing is in Sales Cloud and Service is in the Service Cloud section.

    Hi John,
About Setup => Search Settings, “Enable Search Optimization if your Content is Mostly in Japanese, Chinese, or Korean” this checkbox.
Could you help give an example for what circumstance this checkbox works ?
I tried to create some dummy data in the Leads Object and found nothing changes (include matched data’s order).
    Thanks.

    • JohnCoppedge May 26, 2017 at 5:40 pm #

I don’t think I’m going to be able to answer than one any better than the docs:

Enable Search Optimization if your Content is Mostly in Japanese, Chinese, or Korean If this setting is enabled, search is optimized for the Chinese, Japanese, and Korean languages in the sidebar search. It affects sidebar search and the account search for Find Duplicates on a lead record in sidebar search and global search.
      Note
Enable this option only if users are searching mostly in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean, and if the text in searchable fields is mostly in those languages. Don’t enable this option if you expect content and searches to be mostly in other languages.

    Hi John,
I disable the “limit to items I own” search checkbox in setup search settings, but I can still see the checkbox and it still works, is it a bug?

    • sovike@yeah.net May 25, 2017 at 6:42 am #

I think I’ve found the reason, I turned Chatter off and sidebar search appears.
      Thanks.

I have tried checking and unchecking “Enable Tab Organizer” in User Interface and do not see a difference. What am I missing?

    • JohnCoppedge February 18, 2017 at 3:30 pm #

Turn it off and then shrink your screen – the list of tabs will expand across the screen creating a scroll bar. With it on it will create a tab dropdown at the end of the list of tabs (when you have more tabs than screen space)

  13. ybiyani@hotmail.com February 14, 2017 at 1:32 pm #

Is there a video which demonstrates how these settings work

Enable Drag-and-Drop Editing on Calendar Views
Enable Click-and-Create Events on Calendar Views

I found the following https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGWPk753UgQ for Enable Drag-and-Drop Scheduling on List Views and am looking for something similar for above two options.

    • ybiyani@hotmail.com February 14, 2017 at 1:45 pm #

I think I got what these settings do….

Enable Drag-and-Drop Editing on Calendar Views – When there are events on the calendar, this setting allows dragging the event on the calendar to reschedule
Enable Click-and-Create Events on Calendar Views – Allows triple click on the calendar and create new events

I am debating on the following question.
By default, search results are limited to records owned by the logged in user. My answer is True.
If I am wrong then please let me know how is it False?
    Can you guide me?

False. Search results are limited to records that the user has read access to.

    • Carlos Ali November 26, 2016 at 6:55 am #

Security isn’t usually based on ownership of records, operability is. So, if you own a record ( or are higher up in a hierarchy) you can usually edit (obviously create) share and delete, permissions withstanding. But you can still search for other data that you have permission to view via permission sets, profiles, sharing rules, etc.

    Hi John/All,
How to enable or add records to Public Tags in Salesforce?
I was able to Enable Personal Tag and assign Records of different objects to it.
But couldn’t able to see Public Tag anywhere in My Developer ORG setting or anywhere.

As i read above I disabled the Topic and tried but not able to view Public Tag anywhere.
Is this Public Tag now not available in SF anymore?

    Hi John

i am going for my ADM 201 on 23/2.
i got your mail about updates to the site great work as usual.
I haven’t really looked at the lightning experience, but i am going to go through your UI section again.
Do you think i will be ok with that, and if there will be any specific questions on my exams about the use of the lightning experience.

    thanks

    • JohnCoppedge February 22, 2016 at 10:03 pm #

I would go through the UI section as you stated- I would also do the trailhead on lightning and/or configure it your developer org. It is fairly straightforward to set up, and shouldn’t take you long.

  24. ali.ansari14 January 3, 2016 at 3:55 am #

John, at about 1:53 in your video you said that the Quick Access Menu is not dependent on Profiles or permission sets…so when I went out to enable it for myself in my company’s prod environment, I couldn’t find the option to check…..then I saw the other youtube link that you shared (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnO2a3m76o4) which at about 0:22 says that this needs to be enabled at a profile level or via a permission set.

Thank you for creating this awesome site and for the quick responses you provide for questions people have in each topic.

    • JohnCoppedge January 10, 2016 at 12:10 am #

To use the quick access menu (which is set at the user record), you have to have the “Customize Application” permission (which is set via profile or permission set). Hope that clarifies!

Enable Drag-and-Drop Scheduling on List Views
Enable Separate Loading of Related Lists

Enable Customization of Chatter User Profile Page
-not sure about this one, will have to have a look
Show Custom Sidebar Components on All Pages
-if this is DISABLED, then CUSTOM home page components on sidebar will only be displayed on the home page. A really confusing settings actually, I leave this enabled. If disabled the sidebar will remove custom components when the home tab is not selected…
Enable Drag-and-Drop Scheduling on List Views
      -not sure on this one
Enable Separate Loading of Related Lists
-allows the page to load related lists separately- this can allow a partial page load more quickly if you have a lot of related lists. Often enabled in data intensive or orgs with large sections of related info (e.g. long account page)

Make sense to use this newer link? Thanks.

oeps, disregard my remark. The part you’re referring to “Salesforce Console for Sales” is not included in the newer URL link 😉

  37. Lee Sauer February 8, 2015 at 11:07 pm #

I was trying to check out the Tags feature, but I’m unable to turn on public tags. I understand that Public Tags aren’t there if Topics is turned on, so I tried unclicking “Enable Topics” in Setup/Build/Customize/Topics/Topics for Objects, but that doesn’t seem to have made a difference (in fact I still see the “Click to add topics” on the object bar, although it doesn’t do anything). So is it the case that Public Tags are simply no longer available?

    • JohnCoppedge February 9, 2015 at 8:06 pm #

      Check the reports tab
If you click into a report, do you see “add a tag” under “help for this page” in the top right?
(after enabling public tags for reports)

  38. Stephen Lee November 7, 2014 at 5:35 pm #

Seems like a lot of content dedicated to this section on UI, given that this is only 1% of the admin cert exam. John, would you agree that UI is really only 1% of the exam as noted in the Salesforce Study Guide? Or is it common to see more than a few questions covering these topics in the admin cert exam?

    • JohnCoppedge November 13, 2014 at 4:51 am #

I make be taking a more liberal definition of what UI constitutes and including content that may be covered in other sections of the SFDC study guide. I do believe that you should have a strong understanding of the content covered in this section, although I can’t attest to the exact % of the exam to which it pertains.

  39. Dana Genco October 7, 2014 at 8:32 pm #

Maybe include something on Topics with Tags overview? Didn’t the public tags migrate into Topics in Spring ’14?

  40. Renato Chookolingo September 11, 2014 at 2:49 pm #

    Hi,
In the KEY FACTS column for the text: “When an organization wants to replace standard page layout functionality with a VisualForce page, the standard button (e.g. New, Edit, etc.) must be overridden with a custom button that invokes the VisualForce page.” Is “custom button” technically correct? It looks more like we override a property of the existing standard button.

  41. anusha pudota August 5, 2014 at 9:17 pm #

    Hi John,
I have seen mini page layouts concept somewhere, but not sure about them. What are those for? Are they covered anywhere in the tutorial? Thanks!

    • JohnCoppedge August 7, 2014 at 8:57 pm #

Mini page layouts are referenced in console configuration – they aren’t cover in depth in this guide but would be something you would need to know for service cloud certification, for example.

There’s a typo in the Visualforce key facts. It says “that what” rather than “than what.”
