This guide is designed with several goals in mind:
1. To dramatically reduce the time required to prepare for a certification exam.

Instructions within this guide make the assumption that the Improved Setup User Interface is disabled.

I suggest you double-check your org settings by navigating to Setup --> Customize --> User Interface; ensure "Enable Improved Setup User Interface" is not checked.

If you enable this feature, step-by-step instructions within scenarios and exercises will not line up correctly (as the setup navigation menus will be different).

Appirio - Force.com Logins
[Could / Chrome Extension / Appirio]
I personally recommend LastPass for storing multiple Salesforce credentials - I also use LastPass for most of my other sites (I exclude financial sites).

I enable two-factor grid authentication and require password re-prompt for production logins for added security. I store security tokens in the notes field for each login. You can also use Lastpass with a fingerprint reader - nothing like logging into Salesforce with a swipe!

I've used LastPass within a team environment, sharing hundreds of logins within a group of users as well - can't be beat.

Salesforce Success Community
[Should / Community / Salesforce.com]
User groups are a great way to meet and engage with other Salesforce users, administrators, developers, and consultants. I'm a co-leader myself, and would highly recommend checking out your local user group.

The Salesforce success community is a great way to find information on a variety of subjects, ask and answer questions, and more. This site is definitely worth exploring. Side note: one of the best ways you can learn Salesforce is by answering questions that others have. I learned a ton simply by answering questions on the community site and forums when I first started working with Salesforce.

    Hi John,

I had passed my Salesforce admin exam in first attempt. The material on the topics security, workflow, analytics, sales and services were huge help. Most of the questions at the end of the sessions were food for thoughts and helped to focus on the key takeaways. I would recommend this site to my friends and colleagues.

    Cheers,
    Subha

I have a question? Can we Import User records using Data Import Wizard.

    Your answers would be helpful.

    Thanks in Advance 🙂

    • JohnCoppedge June 12, 2017 at 1:04 pm #

I don’t believe you can with the import wizard, data would work though

Dataloader.io does have options for importing user records.

Hi there, wonderful efforts, I am about to use your guide, could you please tell will if be suffice for Salesforce Spring ’17 Release Examination?

    • JohnCoppedge April 14, 2017 at 1:40 pm #

Yes- I would recommend reviewing the spring 17 release notes. The updates to this site are almost complete, they are mostly related to Lightning which is not covered extensively on the exam.

    Hi john,
I am currently working as a salesforce Administrator.
Recently we started thinking of modifying some of the standard features.
One of them is The Setup–>outbound change set –>add component –> API to find the component type and name/parent object etc. (page).
I would like to add some button or textbox component for some purpose.
To do that , I am not able to understand ,that how can I find out what API that page could be..
Can you help me understand ,how do we recognize any API.
Or is there any good app/tool to have detail idea about the API.
    Thanks,
    Tejal.

    • tejalr8@gmail.com March 24, 2017 at 1:57 am #

HERE Out bound change set is standard functionality and I would like to customize it.

    • JohnCoppedge March 24, 2017 at 8:15 am #

I don’t think you can change those pages- you’d better off looking at another deployment mechanism (ide for example)

hi, I am completely new to Salesforce and need to take the Salesforce Admin exam as a prerequisite for a project that will kick off in 2 weeks. I only have two weeks to prepare for this. Please advise on the MOST important topics and resources I should use to pass this exam. Thanks!!

    • JohnCoppedge February 27, 2017 at 4:28 pm #

It is all in the guide! 2 weeks is not a lot of prep time though- I’d take a look at the official SFDC study guide and compare the section-level %s for the most important points. Security is probably the most important, workflow, reporting, sales/service cloud will all be important as well.

      • malavika707 February 28, 2017 at 10:50 pm #

Thanks John! The guide looks great and I am using this as my bible for the exam. Are questions typically repeated on the Salesforce Admin Certification Exam? Where can I find the latest questions? It would really help to get practice questions from the last couple of months.

        • JohnCoppedge March 13, 2017 at 3:47 pm #

The questions are posted throughout the guide and are updated/reviewed with each release

I’ve started using COD today and thrilled for it. Just created my new dev org and Salesforce has prompted me with a pending critical update of ” Require TLS 1.1 or higher for HTTPS connections”. Is it Ok to update for the purposes of these classes?

Many thanks for this awesome offering.

    HI John,
I just joined. I am from a IT background with business/system analysis programming ability. I do some system administration work on Salesforce on a freelance basis. ( Self thought)
    1. Covering these material alone is sufficient to get through the exam? (Salesforce Certified Administrator (WI16))
    2. How many hours (aprox) required to cover these materiel?
    3. Can you please send me a invoice to my email.

    Thanks very much

    Hi John,
I recently passed Salesforce Admin(201) Cerification and I followed this site for the admin study guide. It helped me a lot for my certification. Now I am planning to
take Salesforce Platform App builder exam . I searched for the study guide over here but I couldn’t able to find.I could find only Admin study guide.Do you have study guide for App builder exam or Can you suggest any study guide apart from provided by Salesforce.

    Thanks

    • JohnCoppedge March 7, 2016 at 3:34 am #

Hey congrats- saw your other post as well. No direct guide, but here’s what I’ve shared with others:

Just completed the App Builder migration exam. It was pretty straightforward – make sure to study order of execution (workflow, validation, process builder, etc.), Salesforce1 layouts, Lightning Pages & Standard Components, rollup summaries and master-detail relationships, publisher actions, and the relationship between actions and page layouts / Salesforce1. All of these are addressed in the study guide.

    Hi,
Iam planning to give my ADM 201 exam. Iam new to sales force and just wondering if this study guide will help me pass the certification exam for winter 16 release
    Thanks

    • JohnCoppedge January 25, 2016 at 6:44 pm #

Yes it will help in preparation for the Winter 16 exam- updates should be done to the site shortly. Just make sure to review the release notes for Winter 16.

  19. Swati_Aggarwal January 8, 2016 at 5:59 am #

    Hi John,
I am completely new to this site and Salesforce as well. I am currently working as an associate consultant in Siebel CRM and interested to work in salesforce thereafter. Request you to please guide me as to which certification should I appear for and how to start preparing for the same.
    Thanks

    • JohnCoppedge January 9, 2016 at 12:13 am #

The admin certification is always a good start – this guide will help you get there. If you are working a lot in app development then you might consider the app builder certification instead or in addition.

Today I passed my Salesforce Certified Administrator Exam. The training material on CertifiedOnDemand was a hugh help! Thank you very much for offering this great resource! I especially liked the clarification provided upon completion of each quiz helping to quickly understand why each multiplce choice was a valid answer or not.

  21. jsobrien December 13, 2015 at 2:03 am #

    Hi John,

Successfully passed the ADM 201 exam today. This site was absolutely a huge help in my preparation. A few tips that I would offer anyone reading this are:

    1) purchase the subscription for full access to this site and use it!
    2) The material categorized as ‘should” is absolutely worth reviewing. Many of the “could” sections are very helpful as well.
    3) If using the flashcards on http://www.Quizlet.com (as mentioned on this site), suggest that you read the questions and then use your dev org to run through the scenarios. Only then, flip the card and compare the answer. Some answers are outdated (or wrong), but the questions can prove to be a useful topics for study.

P.S. I also took the instructor lead Administration Essentials for Experienced Admin (ADM-211) back in April and will take the exam in a few months. Do you also provide a study tool for that exam?

    Thanks again!

    • JohnCoppedge December 14, 2015 at 10:01 am #

These are awesome tips, thanks for sharing. And congrats!

No immediate plans any other guides at this point, maybe some time in the future.

  22. sripriyaravi October 29, 2015 at 1:09 am #

Is there a coupon code / promotion available for the purchase ?

  23. luke.leonard October 19, 2015 at 5:01 pm #

    Hey John,

Is there a reason why the study guide is made assuming that Improved Setup User Interface is disabled? Is there a benefit to having it disabled? It sounds counter intuitive.

    • JohnCoppedge October 22, 2015 at 3:30 am #

      Hi Luke,

The guide was written before the enhanced setup interface was created – the change is largely cosmetic. However if I do end up rewriting the guide I would do so with it enabled.

      Cheers,

      John

John: I have found this guide amazingly helpful. The way you have curated the countless resources and created some of your own is amazing. It has given me the freedom to quickly refresh on topics I’m comfortable with and do a deeper dive on more complex/unfamiliar topics.

That being said, I see this study guide as a resource that I will come back to after the exam. Is my subscription limited by time (e.g., six-month, 12-month access)?

    • Tim Weeks March 25, 2015 at 3:26 pm #

Ignore my question as I just found the answer on the “Sign Up” page. My subscription never expires. Awesome and thanks!

Awesome thanks for the feedback. The subscription to the guide as of today does not expire.

    Hi John,

I would want to know if the topic notes available on your CoD website is updated as per features of Spring 15 release and as per the study guide of Spring 15 available on the SF website?

    • JohnCoppedge March 25, 2015 at 3:23 pm #

Winter 15 today – will be updated shortly to Spring 15. Make sure to review the release notes for Spring 15.

      • Maura McNulty March 30, 2015 at 5:03 am #

Why are you instructing us, who just subscribed today as myself, to set our org to “Summer 13 Release Training”, I’m concerned about learning outdated material, please explain, are your tests and questions passed on 2013 or 2015?

        • JohnCoppedge March 30, 2015 at 2:22 pm #

This guide was written in 2013 using the navigation menus at that time. It has been updated hundreds of times since then. However, I have not re-written all of the exercises for the new UI menu (the functions are exactly the same, the menu items are just ordered differently). The reference to the new UI feature is the link that reference the Summer 13 release training – for your reference. The only release notes that you should review as of today’s writing are the Spring 15 release notes.

  30. Kevin Brown March 11, 2015 at 5:24 pm #

Side note: one of the best ways you can learn Salesforce is by answering questions

  31. Brian Evans February 14, 2015 at 1:10 am #

    Hi John,
Thank you so much for putting this information together. I’m just getting started on going through the material and I saw immediately that the “New UI Theme” needs to be disabled to be compatible with your material, but I now see in my developer org that it cannot be disabled. So I know everything is still there, it’s just been rearranged. Is there a work-around on this in my Org, or am I stuck? If this question is premature because you address it later in your material or if you’ve already addressed it with a previous post, forgive me.
    Thanks again!

    • JohnCoppedge February 14, 2015 at 8:01 pm #

Is that because you turned on communities in your org? You might consider spinning a new dev org for this site.

  33. Sampat Yadawad January 29, 2015 at 2:34 pm #

Thanks John for the quick reply. One more question. I assume the current ADM 201 exam is based on Winter 2015 and any idea by what month/date this will get updated to Spring 2015? By March or in Feb? I am preparing based on Winter 15 and hope to give the exam which will be based on Winter 15 only.

    • JohnCoppedge February 2, 2015 at 4:28 pm #

It will get updated, yes. The fundamentals won’t change from release to release – you do need to be aware of the changes in the platform, but it shouldn’t dramatically impact the exam. You can always take the release training that Salesforce provides for free as well.

  34. Sampat Yadawad January 28, 2015 at 9:58 pm #

    Hello John,

Is this study guide compatible with Winter 15 SF release? I will be taking the ADM 201 exam in Feb 2015 and wondering if this study guide would be compatible with the Feb 2015 ADM 2-1 examination questions. Please clarify.

    • JohnCoppedge January 28, 2015 at 11:06 pm #

Yes the guide has been updated for the Winter 15 release – Spring 15 updates not done yet.

  35. Dharani Animireddy December 22, 2014 at 5:16 pm #

    Hi John,
I have purchased the material today, and planning to prepare for the ADM 201 and wanted to target the exam in the next March ?
Will there be any exams in the march , because i am so confused on the exam dates (winter, summer, spring releases)

I have a good knowledge of CRM, as i worked on Siebel for 5 years , Can you suggest if this is more or less similar to sales force ?? And how should i proceed on?

And i am more worried about the how long the preparation will take? i hope the questions will be answered during my preparation.

    Thanks,
    Dharani

    • JohnCoppedge December 22, 2014 at 5:22 pm #

Check webassessor for exam dates and availability. The material won’t change drastically between releases, and you can take release training to cover any gaps in knowledge. I have never personally used Seibel, so I can’t say what the relationship is between the two. I would suggest that you start on the guide and see how things go – preparation can take anywhere from a matter of days to several months. It depends on a lot of different variables. Good luck!

      • Dharani Animireddy December 24, 2014 at 9:50 am #

Thanks , will see where it goes … Hope i can target in March considering my work pressure
        Happy Christmas 🙂

  36. Gary Singh December 19, 2014 at 10:34 am #

    Hi John,

I’m just starting out and a little confused. It says here “ensure your org is configured for this guide” and then a link to the summer 13 release training. Do I need to do this step at all since the winter 15 has been released? http://www.salesforce.com/customer-resources/releases/winter15/release-training.jsp

Or do I continue with the summer 13, and then afterwards go over winter 15? Apologies if it’s a dumb question, I’m just starting out with zero knowledge here.

    Thanks,

    Gary

    • JohnCoppedge December 20, 2014 at 10:57 pm #

Yes – you need to complete this step. There was a new UI feature that was released that will change the setup menu that is enabled by default in new orgs. The link is to the release training on this feature. Hope that makes sense…

  37. Ashish Singhal December 14, 2014 at 9:02 pm #

    Hi John,

does this training guide updated with WInter 15 release?
    Please let me know ASAP,
    Thanks

  38. Dan Pelberg December 1, 2014 at 11:18 pm #

Question about the actual exam format:
When questions have multiple answers on the exam is it specified how many correct answers there should be?
Ex: Pick two, pick three vs. Pick all that apply

Also, how difficult would you say you made your practice exam in comparison to actual exam questions? Is it a little easier or on par in terms of difficulty?

Thanks so much for all your resources!! They have been a huge help.

    • JohnCoppedge December 3, 2014 at 2:38 pm #

Generally speaking I’ve heard that they are about the same or maybe slightly easier.

    Please let me know ASAP,
    Thanks

This guide will point you to all of the information that you need to successfully complete the admin exam – of course, that does not mean that you will necessarily pass. I have heard from many students that use this site as the sole source for prep and pass on the first attempt.

  40. Amruta Tanksale November 10, 2014 at 9:49 pm #

Does the training guide cover WInter 15 release?

Great site, John – even to have as a reference guide after cert. Any update on a Dev401 guide, would be really helpful?

    • JohnCoppedge October 9, 2014 at 3:05 pm #

Thanks – I don’t know of any resources like this. You can use a great deal of the admin guide for dev cert though, there is definitely quite a bit of overlap.

The short answer is yes – I’ve passed several exams without guides or training. This guide will definitely accelerate your learning and increase your chances of passing, but of course there are no guarantees. The practice exams should give you a good indication.

Hi John, The latest release is now Summer 14 with Winter release fast approaching. I would like to purchase the full study guide but wanted to confirm first that it is up to date with Summer 14 release. Thank you for your time!

It was updated for Winter 14 – there are references to the release training materials so that you will have training that addresses the delta between this guide and the current version. There aren’t many fundamental changes in the core product between releases.

Hi John, How much time is needed to prepare for certification. Also, is your guide enough or do I need to refer to other material during the certification prep? Do you have material for the Salesforce.com Certified Sales Cloud Consultant exam as well?

    • JohnCoppedge September 5, 2014 at 12:17 am #

It all depends on you prior experience, learning style, etc. I would reference as much materials as you have access to (particularly premiere training if available) and spend as much time in SFDC as possible. This guide should cover the vast majority of the exam topics but you will need to dig in to really understand them well. No other study guides at this point.

    Hi John,

Thanks for all the great material. For the 14 version, I understand you will email us once it is released; however, I am new to the community and not sure if you already sent out the update or we still need to supplement with spring 14? Thanks. PS, I plan to take the exam in July, would spring 14 enough or there will be new version out? Thanks again!

    Hi, John,
New to your site and loving it so far. Thank you for narrowing down all the training avenues, articles, posts, videos, etc!

The Salesforce site says that for the Certified Admin exam, I should take their instructor led course, or two of their online courses as well as watch a series of other videos they have available. Is your study guide intended to be a replacement for those courses or in addition to those courses? If I’m diligent about working through the material and studying the resources you’ve listed, should I be pretty well prepared without those online (or instructor led) classes from Salesforce?

    • JohnCoppedge June 10, 2014 at 8:54 pm #

Hi Sherry – the short answer is that it depends. You can self-study and pass the exam; I’ve done it several times myself. It will take longer than if you attend training. Training will help but is not required.

Now that 14 is out, has the content been updated?

I can see a section called “Summer 13 Release Training” which link to a salesforce.com site page. Is this training guide based on Summer 13 release?

    • JohnCoppedge February 19, 2014 at 5:48 am #

The guide is regularly updated to reflect the latest edition- however, the training materials that are best/easily referenced are contained within the Summer13 release training, hence it is being referenced. Thanks for the Q!

Have you updated your content for the Winter 2014 release? I will certifying March 21st 2014; do you know if the exam for this date will be using the Winter 2014 release? Thanks!
