    John ,

I studied the whole classic version for salesforce. Do I have to go through the Beta version as well before sitting for the exam ?

    Thanks
    KJ

The new site will cover the same material with added content. So if you’re confident on what you learned you should be OK – but if you have time I would recommend taking a look at the new content (particularly security) to see if you get anything new from it.

Hey John, I have schedules my Salesforce Admin-201 examon Sept 15, which is roughly 3 weels from now. I have no experience in working as a SF admin. Would I need some more time for the preparation?

    • JohnCoppedge August 25, 2017 at 3:16 pm #

It all depends – if you are preparing full time and are very diligent this could be enough time.

Massive thanks for the time and effort you have been to, to put this guide together. Without this it would have been so much harder to find the information.
I will now put it to good use as a reference tool.

    2. Does this guide covers all the aspect of 17 for the exam.

Your exam will be spring 17 – I’m working on these site updates and should have them completed shortly. In the mean time I would recommend that you review the spring 17 release notes. Yes this is a comprehensive guide.

        Hi John,

May I ask a question regarding lead? If a lead is converted with the Convert button, the original lead does not show up under Tab of lead, However when I manually change the lead status into Closed-Converted(under pickup list checked with Converted), I can see it under Tab of lead. I do not find a field under Object to indicated it is converted or not? Would you like give me a hint how Salesforce knows which record is converted?

        Regards,

  16. kiernan March 28, 2017 at 4:28 pm #

    Hello John & CoD community,

John, Thank you this comprehensive resource.

I am stuck on some of the sections here. I believe I am following the study guide properly. What I am experiencing is that when I am reading the information it makes sense. However retaining the knowledge seems to be the tricky part. On many of the sample exams I take I score between 60% – 70%. The post section quizzes on CoD I score in the 75%-100%.

Based on your background and experience what are some way to better retain the info? I feel like I have bumped up against a wall in pushing past some of the material.

Happy to take in all constructive input.

    Thanks

    • Williamapowell3rd March 28, 2017 at 6:50 pm #

Kiernan, you’re not alone there. I will say CoD is the BEST resource for the Admin exam and the information and explanations are very in depth. It helped me pass my exam (and helps me when I get stuck on stuff from time to time to be honest).

My suggestion to you is hit Trailhead. Find projects or modules that are related to what you are struggling with and get some hands on experience. Based on the content you’re stuck on you may need to tap into another part of your noggin in order to retain it better 🙂

For example, for Sales Cloud Consultant exam I learned a lot of it through memorization and scenarios, whereas platform app builder I needed to do more tinkering in Salesforce and get the creative/hands on side fired up a bit.

      Hope that makes sense.

      Good luck!

      • kiernan March 28, 2017 at 7:58 pm #

        Thank for the input.

Looking for any way to shake it up. Agreed, CoD is the best resource I have found from a knowledge base standpoint.

        Cheers

    Hi John,

I just passed my admin exam today and I owe a lot of it to this great resource that you have created (and maintained). I started out as a business user that fell in love with the platform and its capabilities and your site really helped me put together some of the pieces of the puzzle that I was missing.

Thank you for all that you do for the Salesforce community!

    HI John,

I’ve been told there is a limitation on dependent picklists. We have 12 business units who would like to have field application 2 display values based on what was chosen in application 1. I set up the dependent picklist & it works fine. I set up a record type & page layout for 1 business unit, why can’t I just set a new record type & page layout for each business unit? I would want to do this for leads & opportunities. Am I missing something and/or heading down the wrong road? What would be your path on this?

    thx
    jude

    • Williamapowell3rd November 4, 2016 at 2:02 pm #

Don’t want to steal Johns thunder, but I can’t help but try to help out.

So if I understand your question correctly, you have 12 business units who have 2 picklist fields:
      Application 1
Application 2 (Dependent on picklist #1)

You want options in “Application 1” to be limited by which business unit they are working, with, which will drive options for picklist 2, correct?

      • Judy Shoop November 4, 2016 at 2:17 pm #

Yes I have setup the dependency on Application 1 & Application 2. My question is whether setting up 12 records types & 12 page layouts is a good path. Also, why couldn’t I use the same dependent field on each of these & just have different values per bu?

        • Williamapowell3rd November 4, 2016 at 2:25 pm #

          Hi Judy, you can.

First and foremost, ensure the record type & layout is assigned properly to the profile for the appropriate BU users.

Next, go to your object, and click on the “Record Types” related list. Click on the Business unit record type you want to work on (DONT click on “edit”, click the record type label).

Now youll see a list of picklists on that record type that you can edit. You can now associate picklist values with that record type.

For instance, in my org I have a custom object with sales stages that change based on where they are in the process. Once they get to stage 3 and save the record, it fires a process that changes record type & layout, and the 3 previous stages go away and new ones take its place. Its kind of a “hand off” process from a sales rep to a project manager.

          Does that make sense?

          • Williamapowell3rd November 4, 2016 at 2:26 pm #

woops forgot to remind me when comments are added in case you get stuck.

          • Judy Shoop November 4, 2016 at 2:29 pm #

I think this is the problem “There’s a limit of 10 dependent picklist pairs per page. This is totalled across all objects. Thus, you could have five dependent picklists on Account, and five on Contact, but no more. “

          • Williamapowell3rd November 4, 2016 at 2:49 pm #

Judy, without me seeing your org, its tough to determine why you’re getting that. But it sounds like you created multiple dependencies instead of just one and properly “including” the values based on the chosen values.

Also, I thought of a better way to handle your multiple BU’s instead of having tons of page layouts and record types.

Create a “Business Unit” picklist field with your 12 business units. Create a process builder process for “when record created” with no evaluation criteria. In the immediate actions, set it to “update” record, with formula criteria of the user profile (or however they are partitioned into business units).
            So something like
            CASE(ProfileID#,
            “1”, “Business Unit Name”,
            “2”,”Business Unit Name2″,
            Null)

That way, itll set your business unit name on record create, and then you can make Application #1 picklist dependent on the business unit name picklist, and picklist Application #2 dependent on #1.

          • Judy Shoop November 4, 2016 at 2:51 pm #

Thank you for the advice William, I very much appreciate it.

      • Judy Shoop November 8, 2016 at 3:02 pm #

        William,

I’m not quite sure I get what you are saying, how would the following give me different page layouts, fields, picklist values per BU? Wouldn’t I still need record types & page layouts for each bu to display unique picklists?

        So something like
        CASE(ProfileID#,
        “1”, “Business Unit Name”,
        “2”,”Business Unit Name2″,
        Null)

That way, itll set your business unit name on record create, and then you can make Application #1 picklist dependent on the business unit name picklist, and picklist Application #2 dependent on #1.

        thx
        jude

        • JohnCoppedge November 16, 2016 at 11:54 pm #

Will weigh in here.. not sure if this thread is still alive. Could you just have 3 fields?

E.g. Application Type (instead of record type)
          Dependent Picklist 1
          Dependent Picklist 2

The limitation (10 fields per object) you are referring to is for visualforce pages- doesn’t sound like this limit would apply.

If you want to have record types, then keep in mind you don’t have to have separate page layouts (you could have 12 record types with 1 layout). Layouts are what really introduce maintenance.

  23. ypenneau November 2, 2016 at 1:30 am #

Hi John, Just more of a general question that I hope you can give your honest opinion about. I have been in sales for over 20 years (both inside and outside) so I know the importance of a good CRM. I am looking to make a career change. I have a knack for learning new software and Salesforce very much appeals to me. Please be honest…. I cannot afford to take SF classes so I have been trying to learn on my own. I bought some SF admin books and have purchased the SF classes on Udemy. The Udemy videos are good but the instructor tends to ramble. I have also purchased your Certified on Demand program. All of these things are geared toward self study… So my questions….; Can one get certified by self study with really no experience? If not, do you have any suggestions on how to get experience while not in the SF field? Any help or input is very much appreciated!

    • Williamapowell3rd November 4, 2016 at 1:59 pm #

ypenneau, I dont want to answer for John, but I feel your pain. I only spent 10 years in sales as an outside B2B rep, and it definitely burns you out. Your situation mirrors the same journey I went through. Sick of sales, enjoyed tech/software, couldnt afford the Salesforce U or 3rd party training, and sought options. I even wrote a blog post about my journey, for you itll probably be like reading your OWN story:

      https://medium.com/@billpowell/salesforce-saved-my-life-taking-the-hard-road-4361ccd2dc3e#.7072dnru2

You can 100% get certified and learn for free, or very very low cost. John’s site was my #1 source for getting certified along with a few others, but this by far was the best and worth the fee for the lifetime membership.

The certification process, while you can cram for it, really becomes much easier with some hands on training. I can guide you, if you like, in the same fashion I learned (and trust me, still have a lot to learn).

      • ypenneau November 4, 2016 at 2:46 pm #

William, Thank you so much for the insight and the link to your story. I am signed up for Trailhead and will utilize that and Certified on Demand as my #1 tools. Salesforce is a great tool and the community seems awesome as well.

Dude Bill- awesome story. And thanks for your thoughtful responses- completely agree you can self-study very successfully for certification.

I just realized I don’t have my own story posted on this site. How funny. I was in IT, had learned Salesforce in my IT duties, and then was laid off. Within a few months, I had transitioned my career into Salesforce consulting full time. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m so thrilled that other such as yourself have been able to make the transition as well. There’s no looking back 🙂

  24. suemaier25 October 22, 2016 at 4:07 pm #

    Hi, John,
I’ve been a Salesforce Administrator since 2011 but never felt the need to get certified. My boss this year told me that he wanted me to get certified, and a colleague told me about your site. I researched it and thought it was a very nicely structured study guide. I spent several Sundays going through the material, but ended up “cramming” the last sections I didn’t get to. I know reporting, so I skimmed that – same thing with a couple of other topics (chatter, content)… I did pass my exam on the first try but I had the most trouble with the sections that I skimmed, relying on just my knowledge from working with it. I summed it up to “I know what you CAN do, but your guide helped round that knowledge out with what you CAN’T do. Make sense? Thank you SO MUCH for putting this together. I would have been super embarrassed to fail my certification after doing it for so long!!

    Couple of questions for you:

    1) How soon after a New Feature Releases do you update your mock exam questions?

Hi John! I’m taking the test on Thursday and am finding your site extremely useful! In fact, I’m in enrolled in a course and there’s a bunch of using your guide. On a separate note, have you seen the Spring 2016 Study Guide for the Salesforce Admin Test that Salesforce just released? There is no mention of Lightning and they have something about the “portal” which is supposed to be phased out (replaced by Communities). In addition, they include Mobile Lite (but it has a typo and is listed as “Life”). We are wondering if they made a mistake and posted an outdated guide?

  38. jlgonzalezpatlan March 28, 2016 at 10:48 pm #

I heard that the 201 exam is changing on April 1. Is this true? If so do you recommend testing before the change to the new exam or are the changes minimal?

    Thank you,
    Patty

    • JohnCoppedge March 18, 2016 at 8:34 pm #

Changes should be pretty minimal- this site is updated for the Spring release (which is what that change over would be referring to) so you’ll be covered either way.

      • pzajac March 18, 2016 at 9:04 pm #

Great thanks! It’s a lot of material and I think I’m going to give myself a few more weeks to study and prepare.

  40. BrandonNelson1983 March 4, 2016 at 1:57 pm #

How do I cancel and get my money back? I essentially paid to get links to the free Salesforce help section and YouTube videos. I can find those on my own.

    • JohnCoppedge March 4, 2016 at 2:59 pm #

      Hi Brandon,

I’m bummed the site is not meeting your expectations, but I don’t think your analysis is completely fair.

      1. There is a great deal of content that was produced exclusively for CoD, including practice exams, questions, exercises, vidoes, etc.
      2. The information on CoD is VASTLY better structured for exam preparation than trying to hunt down the information on your own.
      3. There is a free version of CoD that you can try before putting down any money to try out the format.

I’ll reach out via email to discuss.

      Cheers,

      John

    Hello,
I am studying to be a salesforce admin. I have a question. At my current job, when a Sales Rep creates a lead in Salesforce, it automatically goes to another rep. Why is this happening? How can I get this resolved? Whoever creates the lead is the owner of the lead.

    • JohnCoppedge February 26, 2016 at 10:56 pm #

It could be a lot of things causing this – lead assignment rule, trigger, workflow rule, process builder, etc. Most likely either lead assignment rule or workflow rule.

I am aware that if the candidate fails salesforce Admin or any certification in first attempt, can retake exam and there is no limit on number of attempts taken by candidate. But does that also reflect in certification? Ex. if I pass the certification in 3rd attempt, will it be displayed on salesforce certificate that I passed in 3rd attempt? Thanks.

To my knowledge that information is only accessible through webassesor (requiring your username and password). The verification site at salesforce simply states if you are certified.

    Hi.. John
Is this study guide updated ? I am planning to give my certification

    Hi John

I tried to purchase, but comes up with this safety message. “This server could not prove that it is certifiedondemand.com; its security certificate expired 4 days ago. This may be caused by a misconfiguration or an attacker intercepting your connection.”

any idea why I’m seeing this?

    Hi John,

Your guide is excellent, and I was able to pass the 201 exam! I would love to know if you had something similar for the Developer Certification? It didn’t look like it, but wanted to check since your admin course guide was so successful for me. Thanks so much!

    • JohnCoppedge December 2, 2015 at 12:33 am #

No plans to launch any new guides soon- also the dev certification is moving into app builder. Check out the new certs!

Does anybody still work here? I’ve emailed twice. No response

    • JohnCoppedge August 17, 2015 at 7:11 pm #

Are you using the contact form? I think there might be a problem. Please email support at CertifiedOnDemand.com.

      • JohnCoppedge August 17, 2015 at 7:17 pm #

I’ve removed the contact form for the time being, sorry about that.

          Hi,

This website looks good. I am new to SFDC. Can I only study for SFDC admin or for SFDC developer and SFDC business analyst as well?

Will I get help to explore, understand and learn SFDC? Thanks.

          • JohnCoppedge August 27, 2015 at 12:25 pm #

The guide is designed to help prep for admin certification but it will help you learn other areas of Salesforce as well.

    Thanks John for your guidance.

    Hi John,

Can you please help as to I should start from top left, or the right column? I am missing some things somewhere, and don’t know if I am following a sequence correctly?

    Thanks
    Vasu

Hi John, I purchased the certificate on demand but when I log in, it just brings me to this free study tour page. Could you tell me how to access the study guide ?

    Thanks
    Shalini

    • JohnCoppedge December 4, 2014 at 9:03 pm #

If you purchased, then you will have access to the entire guide, free sections included. If you had not purchased, then you would not be able to access the content beyond the free sections.

  50. Jeff Blitstein December 3, 2014 at 6:14 pm #

    John,

I work for an organization that lets us access the salesforce documents and study guides for the ADM 201 exam. Are these docs different than the ones I would purchase on this website?

    Thanks,

    Jeff

Thanks John for the reply. Is there any expiration date for the course after we purchase ? Or is it like i can use the course forever. Please let me know

    Hi John,

Is this material updated for this months exam?

    • JohnCoppedge November 21, 2014 at 10:58 pm #

Working on that currently – will have a posting when complete. Minimal changes from an admin perspective, any release training not updated in the guide is referenced in the last section to ensure you are covered.

  53. Chandrika Tanikella November 14, 2014 at 5:00 pm #

    Thanks John for the reply.
I signed up for the free trial and did complete all the steps but i still see the error and is not allowing me to go through the UI scenarios . It asks me to purchase the product or login (Though I am logged in). Do you see any other problem with my account ? Can you let me know if there is any other way I can complete the rest of the course ? I would like to clear my certification by this month end. The site is too good to understand the saleforce but now stuck with this 🙁
    Please help..

    • JohnCoppedge November 16, 2014 at 9:35 pm #

Apologies – didn’t read the section. You need to purchase the guide to use the content from UI onward.

  54. Chandrika Tanikella November 12, 2014 at 6:29 pm #

    Hi John

I am unable to go through the scenarios in User Interface section and ,any quizes. Can you please let me know if i would need to purchase the guide for that ? I see them to be free but though I am logged in, it says I need to login or purchase the guide. Please help me in this

    • JohnCoppedge November 14, 2014 at 5:51 am #

If you are already logged in, try signing up for the free product – the only way that should happen is if you created an account but didn’t complete the checkout for either the free or paid product.

    Hi John,
Please let me know if you have similar study guide for DEV 401, DEV 501 and Service Consultant exam .
I got certified DEV401 in 2012 but it is expired as I was too busy to maintain it.
Should I register for another DEV 401 exam or is it better to get different exam?
    Please advise,
    Thanks
    Tina

    • JohnCoppedge October 14, 2014 at 1:27 am #

No other guides at this stage – I would recommend DEV401 if you are going the developer router, otherwise I would recommend ADM201.

  56. Rehan Mir September 30, 2014 at 8:10 pm #

Do you have the Sales force Advanced Admin 301 study material?

  57. Raza Syed September 25, 2014 at 11:59 pm #

I am unable to login into training module, keep getting same massage “login or buy the module”.

I have already submitted couple of help request.

    • JohnCoppedge September 28, 2014 at 4:01 pm #

This was resolved via email to my knowledge. Please let me know if you have any other issues.

      • Raza Syed September 28, 2014 at 4:52 pm #

Thanks John. It is working now.

  58. Ron Koppelmann February 21, 2014 at 8:22 pm #

The grey text is bit hard on the eyes (at least for me 😉 perhaps the color of the text, especially for the quizes could be changed to black? The grey text and font seem to be an homage to the Apple website, which I appreciate but they use a larger font. It’s a nit of course and while I’ve only subscribed for a day, this seems to be a great help since I don’t have access to a SF org that has premier support where I could take the SF training to prep for certification. Thanks!

    • JohnCoppedge March 8, 2014 at 7:24 pm #

This is on the short list of site improvements and a fairly common request. Stay tuned!

  59. Siva November 15, 2013 at 8:23 pm #

    John,

Is there a separate section or area dedicated for practice tests on Admin?

I have gone through all sections on your web site and took Quiz in each section, and now I’m looking for practice tests to mimic the actual exam. Where is it or can you provide the link for that please?

    Thanks
    Siva.

    • JohnCoppedge November 17, 2013 at 4:55 pm #

The full practice exam is not complete yet – stay tuned, it will be in the final section of the guide.

      • Siva November 18, 2013 at 7:19 pm #

John, Is this something that will be ready this week?

        • JohnCoppedge November 20, 2013 at 7:13 pm #

Afraid not – @DreamForce and absolutely slammed. It is on the roadmap, immediately after changing the membership plugin.

How do I upgrade. Is there an option on my profile page?
